Last month, twelve Thai schoolboys, the oldest all of 16 years of age, went to explore caves in a forest park after football practice. Trapped and incommunicado, they waited for days to be discovered. They got their wish, and with it, the world's attention.
Since the "Wild Boar" football team and their coach went missing on June 23, the drama has received nearly blanket media coverage in Thailand. When they were found in the Tham Luang caves on Monday, the Bangkok Post, a leading English language daily, called it "the icing on a national cake of pride".
The boys and their coach entered the caves, located in Chiang Rai province, despite a sign which warned that its passages and chambers were prone to flooding. When Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha visited the site on June 29, he said he was worried for the missing 13.
